Using Fat Transfer As A Part Of Facial Rejuvenation By Michael A. Devlin, MD on May 18, 2015

Fat Transfer, which is also known as fat grafting, is an artistic anti-aging cosmetic technique that smooths, boosts and rejuvenates the face.

It requires a blend of precision, skill and artistry. Dr. Michael Devlin has been performing fat grafts since 2001. The techniques and the instruments have evolved over this time and the results are dramatically amazing.

Fat Transfers can be used alone in a single procedure or can be combined with other facial surgeries for complete rejuvenation. Best of all, fat grafting is a semi-permanent cosmetic restoration so the results will last for years.

As you age, your skin thins and you lose fat. This can make the skin look like it sags and produces the dark circles underneath your eyes.

This happens to women and men of all body types: small frame, medium frame, large frame.  A Fat Transfer to the face adds fat to the area beneath the skin, and has the effect of 'filling out the face' to a more youthful state.

Fat injections are commonly used to rejuvenate:

  • Wrinkles and lines around the eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Fill in areas of the temples, creating more youthful contours.
  • Add volume to lips for a full and reduces the fines lines that lipstick “bleeds into”.
  • Provide "lift" to the upper-face area when injected into the cheeks, this can prolong the need for facelift procedures.

Fat grafting can be used in the same way that other dermal fillers are used. The difference is the injectable fat is taken from your own body, typically the abdomen.  The fat is then processed, purified and reinjected into the problem areas of the face. Compared to injectable facial fillers such as Juvederm, a Fat Transfer procedure is more involved because the fat has to first be harvested(taken) from another part of the body with Liposuction. However, unlike injectable fillers, Fat Transfers can be used in larger volumes to fill larger defects.

Fat injections can be performed under local or oral sedation using a combination of pills that make you very sleepy. You may have minimal bruising after the procedure with mild swelling.

Do fat injections last?

The answer is an overwhelmingly yes! A large percentage of the injected fat cells do indeed survive and are permanent. However, since some fat cells are lost in the immediate post op period, we tend to 'overcorrect,' or inject more than we need to. Once transferred, the majority of the fat cells will be incorporated by your own blood supply, making them a permanent part of your body. This is the reason why fat transfers are longer lasting than dermal fillers. After the majority of the swelling is gone, approximately a week later, you will have a very good idea of what the final result will be.

Fat transfers result in natural looking appearances. Those who know you best will notice you look more vibrant, but they'll never be able to guess why or how.
